Kindness as an Internet currency

Act of kindness

Something new happened to me today, I was a bit stuck on a topic to write about. I confessed this to Carl (Slacker Reform, have been talking a lot lately) and he suggested I write something on Kindness or Generosity. A brilliant idea and let me start with saying thank you Carl for this kind and generous sharing of thoughts.

There is a key to kindness and generosity that probably everybody knows but is rarely truly practiced: Treat others as you would like them to treat you. Even if those people don’t treat you kindly. Always have a smile on your face when dealing with other people and it’s bound to rub off on them from time to time. It’s even said that smiling while on the phone can effect the person on the other end. The power of a smile.

Some people go even further and help you with things even though you’re in no position to help back. I think I know why these people do it. They get a kick out of helping others and genuinely enjoy seeing others happy.

One of those people I would really like to thank is Laura for her help with Project Mojave and for the awesome header she made for my blog. Thank you Laura for all the great help!

Through this blog I’ve come in contact with some amazing people who at a moment’s notice are willing to help with just about anything. These people are rare however so if you have one or more of them in your social network please do cherish them and let them know you really appreciate them. As said, they probably treat you like they want you to treat them and with all the goodness they give you it would be almost impossible not to be good to them too.

It’s a short blogpost today and a bit of a ramble but with a key message

“Treat others as you would like to be treated”

You’ve most certainly heard of this “rule”, do you actually apply it in your life?

I’d like to share a second rule that comes from the “Wiccan rede” (the key moral system or pagans)

“An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will”

In other words, you can do anything you like, as long as you don’t harm others by doing so.

200 Mph on a motorcycle through the desert? If you feel the need to do so then do it. But if you crash will you harm your family? What would you parents say if the police are on their doorstep with grave news. It’s a harsh example but it’s the step most people simply don’t see. You can easily hurt your loved ones with the consequences of your actions.

Similarly I could glorify the beliefs of a certain German nutcase with a square mustache. This blog (and the Internet in general) can easily be used for such things. But would I hurt people who read it? Would I have a negative impact? I most certainly would. Let me state that I do not agree with that German’s ideas or those types of ideas in a broader perspective.

We’re all humans and we’re all equal. See everyone as a mirror of your self an treat yourself kindly. I would like to leave you with two homework assignments:

  1. Smile at everyone you make eye contact with today. Chances are you will make them smile and that they in turn will make others smile with that smile. Smiles are viral.
  2. Do some random acts of kindness today.

And please tell me what happened. Have fun!
