I wrote down lists of what I was keeping and what I was getting rid of, I listed items on Craigslist, Amazon.com, I even made lists of where I listed things.

I was trying to get the most value from everything I was getting rid of, so I'd keep things for longer, sitting in my closet waiting for a buyer. I realized that I was no better off than I was before.

I had to stop and think about why I started this. I wasn't getting rid of everything to make money.
I set out to really change my lifestyle. But in the process got caught right back up in the whole machine of gotta have more, more $. It just looked like I was changing because I was "downsizing".

Instead of my life being all about acquiring things, my life was about selling things, to acquire money. Which wasn't why I started.

So I re-adjusted my plan.
I was downsizing to live a life that didn't care about possessions or money.
And so I didn't care about ME making money on my things I was getting rid of.
I thought about who or what organization could take my things and either use for their programs or sell to help fund their programs and help others.

If you're in the same place here are some ideas that might help you.
The main things I had were books, dvds, recreation equipment, hobby stuff and games.

Books/Textbooks
Donate them all to betterworldbooks.com - you can select an organization that they'll donate some of the value of the your books to and they have programs to improve literacy around the world. And they offer free shipping.
Most local schools and library's also have book drives.

Clothes/ Household Items/Furniture/ anything
Salvation Army, Goodwill, local charities. Not only can these organizations help fund great programs to help people, it also helps people purchase at really affordable prices.

Sports Equipment/Hobby/Games
Local after-school youth programs

*I know not everyone can afford to give everything away.
But try to figure out how much time it's taking you to sell an old bookcase, is it worth the time you could be spending with family or friends? just some thoughts.

thanks so much for posting this!

I took the "100 Item Challenge" and narrowed my belongings to 47 items!!

You may think that's impossible but did I mention my wife and daughter have enough "things" for 3 families. I showed my wife this blog when I started and she thought I was crazy... I've tried everything to get her to minimize but she is not budging. My daughter thinks the challenge is cool and wants to try but my wife has a hard time letting things go. I do feel more "free" since taking the challenge but now I face my wife's hoarding habits daily.

If only I could get my wife to join the challenge....
