Hey Christiaan,

Ok, basic regardless of background and prior experience. "Things that you take for granted that anybody can do, until you meet a person who can’t do it." I had to sit with that one for a bit. The two questions that came to mind were:

1. At what point do you draw the line and say that something is "basic"? Take cooking for instance. You mentioned cooking an egg. What's to say that that's too advanced? Why not say that learning to boil water or grease a frying pan isn't ultimately basic? I chose a cartwheel because anyone can walk and stand, but to have bodily control, one should be able to do a cartwheel.

2. What inspired you to write this?

Hi Ben,

A cartweel basic? It might be basic for some, but is it something everybody should be able to do? I think it would be like everybody should be able to tune a guitar. Although it's basic in guitar playing, guitar playing in itself is hardly basic wouldn't you think? But let's have a quick think on other physical things:
- Catch and throw a ball
- Sit up straight
- Walk straight
- Have a legible handwriting

Do any of these seem basic to you? I'm trying to identify things everybody should be able to do, regardless of background and prior experience. Things that you take for granted that anybody can do, until you meet a person who can't do it.

I'm almost insulted that no sort of movement is included! Given my background, I would include knowing how to do a cartwheel. It's the foundational move for most of acrobatics and requires total body control and awareness. Is there any sort of physically related item you would include in the list?

Most people thought that faking our way through would benefit us in the long run, but they are wrong. Eventually, the truth shall be revealed and we will be the one to suffer its sting.
By being true to ourselves, we can discover our unique gifts. :-)

"Only when we get comfortable in our own skin can we have the courage to pare down to what it truly important to us"

*Doesn't say a word, only nods in total agreement*

This is so true, and I believe it is a process we all have to go through. Only when we get comfortable in our own skin can we have the courage to pare down to what it truly important to us...

this is a great post. i think the world would benefit from more people being themselves, and not worrying about expectations because everybody agrees on core things like integrity, and respect. those are enough in themselves combined with an authentic personality to see that you will be successful on any journey worthy of those qualities. I actually just wrote a post about this very same thing: http://bit.ly/c3zqxA
